Content Focus: Partial Product/Generic rectangle, greatest common factor (GCF)
Language Focus: Listening
Vocabulary Focus: Generic Rectangle = Partial Product
Standards:
- 6.NS.4. Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor.
- 6.EE.3. Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3(2 + x) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3x; apply the distributive property to the expression 24x + 18y to produce the equivalent expression
Arts Integration: Primary secondary colors/ color mixing; Investigate and expand knowledge of studio skills, techniques, materials, tools, and elements and principles of art and design.
Lesson Objectives: Students will define greatest common factor (GCF) and use it to find the dimensions of generic rectangles. Lesson Seed: CPM CC1 Lesson 2.3.3. I can mix colors to create a Perler Bead Generic Rectangle of compound colors to show distributive property products.
Activities: Students will create a perler bead key chain to show how to multiply.
Engagement/Introduction: When you solve a puzzle, is there always one answer? To a crossword puzzle with words, this is typically true. There is only one way that the letters can be entered so that everything will work and match the clues. But in a number puzzle there may be more than one answer that fits the clues. As you work today, think about and discuss with your team whether there is more than one way to solve a problem and how you know this to be true. Discuss multiplication facts, show how breaking apart numbers make them easier to multiply.
