Overview

Through this interdisciplinary 12-credit certificate, students will develop their knowledge of careers in museums as well as other fields that foreground the representation of people, art, cultures, history, as well as the relationships between humans and the natural environment. In addition to professional museum skills, students will gain knowledge from multiple perspectives on the issues and ethics of representation, pedagogical and philosophical considerations, and community collaboration integral to contemporary museum practice.

Courses

Courses must be taken from at least two departments, and at least 9 credits should be upper division.

These courses stress knowledge crucial to the development of ethical and responsible museum professionals including critical analysis of representational practices and ethical and accountable collaboration with constituent communities.

A maximum of 3 credits may be taken from the following list of courses centered on writing and professional skills relevant to museum professionals.

  • ENGLISH 207 – Introduction to Professional Writing (prerequisite: Any Writing-Based Inquiry Seminar (WBIS 188), English 101, or English 110)
  • ENGLISH 317 – Technical Writing (prerequisite: Any Writing-Based Inquiry Seminar (WBIS 188), English 101, or English 110)
  • ENGLISH 385 – Professional and Digital Writing (prerequisite: English 281 or consent of instructor)
  • ENGLISH 388 – Grant Writing Foundations (prerequisites: 30 credits to include WBIS 188, English 101, or 110)
  • ENGLISH 397 – Digital and Multimodal Writing (prerequisite: English 207 or consent of instructor)

Internship Courses

Optional. Students are encouraged to earn 3 credits through an internship at a museum or related institution through one of the following courses. A reflection at the end of the internship should apply learning outcomes from at least two other courses taken for the Museum Studies Certificate. Academic supervisor for the internship will assess the final reflection.
