Edward M. Penson Distinguished Teaching Award

Each year, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (Three Campuses One University), recognizes the contributions of its faculty and instructional academic staff members with the Edward M. Penson Distinguished Teaching Award.

The purpose of the Edward M. Penson Distinguished Teaching Award is to emphasize the University’s commitment to teaching excellence and to stress the importance of teaching to the University.

Individuals from all three campuses are encouraged to apply.

Instructions for Eligibility and Submission of Electronic Nominations

PLEASE NOTE: All nomination materials must be submitted electronically in a single document, including the nomination form (see link at bottom of page); printed nominations will not be considered.

  • The applicant is responsible for compiling and completing nomination information and emailing his/her materials first to the dean. Each college will have its own deadline, and the dean of that college must approve the applicant and then forward the materials to the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor, who will forward materials to the Distinguished Teaching Award Committee.
  • All nomination materials must be completed and submitted to the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor by 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2024 for consideration by the Distinguished Teaching Award Committee.

Faculty

Eligibility:

Current full-time faculty who: (a) are in at least their sixth year of service to their current institution; (b) have taught an average of at least 6 credits per year over the past 3 years; (c) are teaching during the current year.

Evidence:

Teaching Summary: Briefly summarize teaching assignments for the past three years. Include information from your teaching career that will assist the committee, such as a list of courses taught, enrollments, course level, and a one-page (maximum) summary of teaching philosophy.

Teaching Excellence: Summarize data from your teaching career of student and peer evaluations. Attach (a) one to three letters of support/ recommendation from current or past students; and (b) two to three letters from colleagues. Include summaries of at least half of your student evaluations from the past three years.

Professional and Scholarly Growth: List items (books, articles, shows, performances, reviews/papers/presentations at professional meetings) related to professional and scholarly growth that incorporates teaching excellence.

Institutional and Extra-Institutional Service: List service to the unit/university/community and beyond that incorporates teaching excellence.

Instructional Academic Staff (IAS)

Eligibility:

Current IAS who: (a) are in at least their sixth year of service to their current institution; (b) at .75 FTE or more; (c) are teaching at .50 FTE or more during the current year.

Evidence (criteria are restricted to components of teaching):

Teaching Summary: Briefly summarize teaching assignments for the past three years. Include information from your teaching career that will assist the committee such as a list of courses taught, enrollments, course level, and a one-page (maximum) summary of teaching philosophy.

Teaching Excellence: Summarize data from your teaching career of student and peer evaluations. Attach (a) one to three letters of support/ recommendation from current or past students, and (b) two to three letters from colleagues. Include summaries of at least half of your student evaluations from the past three years.

SUBMISSIONS ARE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING (for Faculty and Instructional Academic Staff):

  1. A condensed (five-page maximum) CV;
  2. Five-page (maximum) narrative demonstrating that the nominee meets the eligibility criteria and provides the requested supporting evidence;
  3. Required student evaluation of instruction reports; summary evaluations and copies of appropriate student evaluations (SOS);
  4. A maximum of six letters of support/recommendation that may include: a) one to three letters from current or past students, and b) two to three letters from colleagues.
