The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Considered to be the first feminist novel, this 1899 controversial text deals with the ideas of Southern womanhood, love and depression. It focuses on the life of a middle-class heterosexual white woman.
Shedding & Literally Dreaming by Verena Stefan
According to the Feminist Press, “Sometimes called the feminist equivalent to Mao’s ‘little red book,’ Shedding narrates the transformation of a young woman’s consciousness against the background of the rising women’s movement of the early 1970s.”
Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today’s Feminism, edited by Daisy Hernádez and Bushra Rehman
An anthology of writings that will stretch the reader’s understanding of identity, multiculturalism and gender. Our reading group will focus on selected readings.
