The Women's Center strives to build the personal, academic and professional capacity of women by providing opportunities to connect, serve and lead.
We endeavor to help women and men of all walks of life to learn to work, play, and live together in ways based on mutual respect by;
- providing resources and education for the UW-O community;
- creating a welcoming place for women to connect;
- promoting an environment that values diversity; and
- promoting engagement between students, faculty and the community in the context of women's issues and needs.

Crucial Conversations: Women and Leadership in the 21st Century
Speakers: Jessica King and Karen Bowen
Council Member King was elected to the City Council in April, 2007. Jessica is a native of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She received her high school diploma in 1993 from St. Mary Springs, Fond du Lac. Jessica received her undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO) in 1998, with majors in International Studies, History and Political Science. She received her law degree in 2001, along with a Certificate in Global Legal Studies from Thomas Jefferson School of Law (TJSL) in San Diego, CA. |

After working at the University for 34 years, Karen Bowen will be retiring in December. During that time, she taught for the Reading Study Center and the Human Services Department, served as affirmative action officer and executive assistant to the chancellor, was the Employee Assistance Program director and an academic advisor for both Letters and Science and Education and Human Services, and is ending her career as Assistant Dean for Student Academic Policy and the director of CAPP (Cooperative Academic Partnership Program). She also developed the UW Oshkosh credit for prior learning process and taught a freshman year experience class, as well as a graduate class for UW Madison. She earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration (Higher Education) from UW Madison, and has her B.A. and M.S.E. from UW Oshkosh. She has served on boards for the Red Cross, United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and several other organizations, and is completing her twelfth year on the Oshkosh Area School District Board of Education. She is a member of the State Superintendent of Education's Advisory Council on Charter Schools, and is a grant reader for the DPI. Karen and her husband of 41 years, Ted, have two adult children, Ed and Ann (and a new son-in-law, Mike). |
