Love, Power, and Money: Assessing Your Family Business

Members agree that our September 10 program, Love, Power, and Money: Assessing Your Family Business, hit the mark! When asked whether the program met expectations, members replied     Dr. Dean Fowler, internationally recognized family business expert, explained the four critical interrelationships between the individual, the family, ownership and management that families in business must manage. Fowler showed that these interrelationships can be managed if the family masters the four related success factors: common values, communications skills, business needs, and vision and goals. He gave validity to his presentation by providing family business examples to illustrate his points. He emphasized that families that address these critical factors head on, before they experience a crisis, ensure the health of both the business and the family.

Dr. Fowler provided a summary report of the data that resulted from the assessment process that 79 individuals participated in during August. He built on the issues that were weak areas by providing strategies and examples for addressing these areas successfully.

Following the introductory presentation, members worked in a discussion group of their choice on one of three topics the assessment indicated needed more discussion and agreement: Developing a Family Vision, Family Employment and Business Competency and Retirement Transitions.

One person said, "The discussion session and evaluation were great." Another said, "this program is the boost our family needs to discuss items that we know need to be addressed." Overall, the content of the presentation, the group discussions and the assessment reports received high marks.

We thank Dr. Fowler for joining us and for the wealth of information he provided.

2nd Annual Dinner

Menasha Corporation is one of the well-recognized, highly successful family businesses in our area. Have you ever wondered how they have survived and flourished into the 5th generation? Have you ever wanted the opportunity to ask the family questions about how they managed many of the challenges of family business survival and success?

Well, here is your opportunity. Our presenter at the dinner on October 20 at the Butte des Morts Country Club will be Bill Shepard, Group President of the Packaging Division and 5th generation member of the Menasha Corporation family.

I met Bill in early August at the request of our program committee to invite him to be our guest speaker. He accepted our invitation and asked about the topics we might be interested in hearing from him.

I agreed to invite you, our members, to send me questions and topics you would like him to include in his presentation. So, here is your chance to get the answers to questions you always wanted to ask.

Please call or send your questions and topics to me by September 24. I will forward them to Bill with our appreciation for customizing this presentation to our interests.

Member Recruiting

We are looking for family businesses that are interested in learning how to continuously improve the health and well-being of their families and businesses. These family businesses can benefit from participation with us in the Wisconsin Family Business Forum. Over 600 family businesses were introduced to the Forum during the summer. Some have responded by requesting information about the Forum and may want to speak to some of you, our members, about the value you have found in the Forum.

We hope you will help us identify fitting family businesses, will welcome the opportunity to talk with them, and will, as appropriate, encourage their membership. We believe that the Forum can benefit from additional family business members with whom to interact.

If you would like to have the Forum meet with a specific business leader who you think would be a potential Forum member, please contact Sue Schierstedt, (920) 424-2257. We are continuously introducing family businesses to the Forum.

Do you have these dates reserved on your calendars? If not, please add them now. You won't want to miss any of these programs. For more details, consult the program brochure. If you don't have one, please request one. We would be happy to send you one.
