Graduate Student Intern

Responsibilities:

In this position, a graduate student will

  • tutor students of varying levels of expertise on all aspects of their writing by working individually with students to help them better understand and improve their writing processes.

  • participate in peer consultant training and help organize and lead staff development meetings.

  • make appointments, complete tutoring logs, and correspond with instructors.

  • work on special Writing Center projects.

  • assist with writing across the curriculum efforts and help support the general administration of the WC.

  • work directly with the WC director to understand the basic theory and practice of WC work and to contribute to various WC projects and initiatives.

  •  

Hours are flexible and vary according to the student’s schedule. The graduate intern will work ten hours a week during the fourteen-week Fall and Spring semesters, and perhaps ten hours per week during the three-week Fall and Spring Interims.

 

Requirements:

  • Good academic standing as a graduate student at UWO.

  • Willingness to take on new projects, engage with Writing Center theory, work closely with the director, help oversee the undergraduate writing consultants, and learn basic administrative tasks.

  • An interest in Writing Center work, Writing Program Administration, or Rhetoric and Composition (preferred).

In addition, the graduate intern must be energetic, responsible, and self-directed. Previous experience tutoring writing is a plus.

Prepare a cover letter detailing your qualifications and interest, a résumé, a brief sample of critical writing (5–8 pages) including a Works Cited page, a cover page explaining the purpose for which the piece was written and the reason you chose to submit it, and two letters of recommendation. Deliver these to Dr. Crystal Mueller, Writing Center Director, by e-mail to muellec@uwosh.edu or by hand in the Student Success Center, Suite 102.
