Online Tutoring for Online and Distance Ed Courses

Current online tutoring initiatives

Since March 2010, the Writing Center has offered e-mailed tutoring for online and distance ed students. During Summer 2010 and Summer 2011, half of our sessions were held asynchronously, via e-mail. For more information about asynchronous tutoring procedures and how the consultant will work with you, please watch the following two online videos that explain more specifically how our e-mail tutoring works.

The first video tells about the online tutoring process overall.

Online Part 1

The second video tells you more specifically what to expect in the feedback we send. If you have difficulty accessing the videos or have an auditory impairment, you can read the video script here.

Online Part 2

Where does the comma go again?

If you have a quick question for a Writing Center consultant, try our Meebo Quick Question feature (click on Ask Us a Question to the left), which is available to assist all students (we'll ask you for your Titan ID number). If a consultant is logged on at the time of your question, he or she will be try to answer your question right away. If the question is more involved than can be resolved in a quick chat session, the consultant will ask you to come for a walk-in or scheduled session so we can better assist you.

Interested in trying some newer, more interactive technologies?

If you are more confident with technology and are interested in trying an alternative method of online tutoring, please contact the Writing Center director, Dr. Crystal Mueller. Options include trying a digital video recording of the consultant responding to your writing, rather than having a written response. Another option might be trying live chat via D2L or Skype. A third option might be a shared screen video chat or conference using Skype or a program like dimdim. We hope to offer additional options to students, and you could help us test these methods.

Wondering if we could offer a certain kind of service?

If you have additional needs as an online or distance ed student, the Writing Center wants to hear from you. Please contact the Writing Center director, Dr. Crystal Mueller. We are eager to help you succeed in your academic endeavors!
