Online Tutoring for Online and Distance Ed Courses
Online tutoring via email or Google Hangouts
When scheduling an appointment, writers have the option of choosing an eTutoring appointment. With this option, writers receive a screen recording of their draft with a consultant providing oral feedback about the draft. This option is best for anyone who can''t meet either in the Center or online during our business hours (9a–9p M–Th, 9a–4p F, 4p–9p Sundays).
Writers also can choose a synchronous appointment via Google Hangout, which enables them to meet live with a consultant about their work. This option is best for writers who want the same thorough feedback that meeting face-to-face in real time affords. It's a great option for brainstorming or understanding an assignment, as well as for getting feedback on a draft. This service is available during our regular business hours, but special arrangements for additional times to meet could be made by contacting the Writing Center. More information about how a Google Hangout works can be found by clicking here.
When scheduling an online appointment, writers can access the schedule to reserve a time that works best for them to receive feedback. A consultant will provide feedback at that time. Writers will be prompted to attach a draft when they save their appointment, or they can log back into the system to attach their draft before the time of the session.
Since March 2010, the Writing Center has offered asynchronous tutoring for students enrolled in online classes or who live more than 40 miles from campus. In Spring 2011, we added synchronous tutoring options. We now offer online tutoring to all students during sessions when we have limited hours (interim, summer, or breaks).
Use Chat to Get Answers to Quick Questions
If you have a quick question for a Writing Center consultant, Use Google Chat. For instructions, click on Ask a Question (chat) to the left. This service is available to assist all UW Oshkosh students.
If a consultant is logged on at the time of your question, he or she will be try to answer your question right away. If the question is more involved than can be resolved in a quick chat session, the consultant will ask you to schedule a full-length session so we can better assist you.
The best time to reach someone for immediate help on Google Chat is 20 minutes before the hour, when our scheduled sessions are more likely to have ended, but check whenever you have a question we can help answer.
