WASAH Dates -- 2010-11 Activities

Seminar No. 1 -- Thurs., Sept. 23rd, 6:00-8:30 p.m., UW Oshkosh

Seminar 1 will be held at the Forrest Polk Library on the UW Oshkosh campus. The first half of the seminar will feature Jeff Pickron facilitating a discussion of Chapters 20-22 of David Kennedy's "Freedom from Fear." The second half will provide an opportunity for teaching scholars to conduct online or in-person research on their lesson plan projects, and to explore primary documents at the Area Research Center.

Fall WASAH Workshop -- Wed, Oct. 6th at UW-Green Bay campus

Fall workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and be held at the UW-Green Bay campus in the same building that the summer institute was held. Three morning sessions will include: 1) UW Milwaukee professor Rob Smith covering the Making of the African American Identity/civil rights protest history, and reviewing digital toolbox resources Volume 3 presented by the National Humanities Center; (2) UW Green Bay history professor Kim Nielsen presenting on "Freedom to do What? Sex and the Supreme Court"; and (3) Appleton School District middle school teacher John Wuebben facilitating a discussion on "Teaching History without Lecturing: Differentiated Lessons, Assignments and Assessments that get Students Thinking." The two afternoon sessions will feature: (1) continuation of UW Milwaukee history professor Rob Smith's session on Making of the African American Identity and review of digital toolbox resources; and (2) UW Madison history instructor John Kaminsky presenting on "The New Republic in Crisis," focusing on Shay's Rebellion and other unrest of citizens shortly after the Revoluntionary War completed.

Seminar No. 2 -- Saturday, Nov. 6th, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Wausau

We will meet at UW_Marathon County. Seminar to feature David Kennedy's "Freedom from Fear" book discussion facilitated by Brett Barker, focusing on Chapters 20-22. Seminar will also feature UW-Stevens Point professor Shanny Tuft giving a presentation entitled "American Religious Pluralism." Seminar No. 3 -- Wed., Dec. 8th, 6:00-8:30 p.m., at CESA 7, Green Bay

Seminar No. 3 will feature presentation by UW-Green Bay professor Kendall Staggs on the Preservation of American Freedom, Sept. 11th, and Middle East Relations. Title of his presentation is "Why Do They Hate Us? American Freedom and Recent U.S.-Middle East Relations." Seminar No. 4 -- Sat., Jan. 8th, 10:00-12:30 p.m., Reeve Union 214, UW Oshkosh

UW Oshkosh historian Stephen Kercher will facilitate a discussion on Rick Perlstein's book "Nixonland," from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Discussion will center around Chapters 13-25 (pp. 274-538). The first hour of the seminar will feature a presentation from fellow UW Oshkosh historian Michelle Kuhl, entitled "We have Seen the Fate of the Indian:" African American Leadership in the Shadow of the Plains Wars." She gave a presentation on this topic back in Oct. 2008 when she was first researching this topic. She now has updates and new information to share given her research. project has grown in a new direction.

Seminar No. 5 -- Tues., Feb. 8th, 6:00-8:30 p.m. in Wausau

Brett Barker will facilitate a book discussion on "Nixonland", chapters 13-25. A file containing discussion questions is posted in the "2010-11 Workshops" Section of Plone. Discussion will focus in part around the central importance of 1968 as a seminal election and signal of party realignments, similar to 1896 and 1932. Brett will also use Nixonland as a starting point for faciltating discussion around political two party system and change since 1854, including what the parties stand for, who they appeal to, and how that appeal has shifted over time.

Spring WASAH Workshop -- March 2nd, 2011, UW-Green Bay

On March 2, 2011, the WASAH program will host one workshop, instead of two regional workshops. WASAH teaching scholars are required to attend the workshop, to be held at the UW-Green Bay campus. The workshop will again feature a "share fair session" for teachers to share their lesson plans and work products with others. We will again invite "guest teachers" of American history to attend the workshop. Time will be set aside during the workshop for teaching scholars to complete a post-test measuring growth in content knowledge. (Teachers completed the pre-test assessment in Wausau in July 2008.) Listed below is the tentative schedule for the workshop.

WASAH Seminar No. 6 -- Tues., April 5th, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Appleton

UW Oshkosh professor Stephen Kercher will facilitate a book discussion of the final chapters (26-34) of Rich Perlstein's "Nixonland". The Seminar will be held at the Siekman Room at the History Castle of the Museum, downtown Appleton. Discussion questions will be posted in the "2010-11 Workshops" section of this Plone site.

Seminar No. 7 -- Sat., April 16th, 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at CESA 7, Green Bay

Seminar will feature two activities: (1) for first hour, David Voelker will lead a book discussion on Chapters 20-22 of David Kennedy's "Freedom from Fear." Specific discussion questions are posted in the "2010-11 Workshops" Section of this Plone site. (2) UW-Green Bay historian Vince Lowery will lead a discussion on Civil War and historical memory, entitled "Remembering, Reliving and Refighting the Civil War."
