Bill Van Nuland -- Black Hawk War (year 1)

Weyauwega-Fremont 5th grade teacher Bill Van Nuland created a lesson plan focusing on the experiences that white settlers and Native Americans faced regarding the Black Hawk War. The lesson plan is designed for grade 4-8 students, and will help them to learn and understand Wisconsin history, including immigration and settlement, fur trading, and Native American experiences and events prior to the Black Hawk War.

Tina Thone -- Native American Boarding Schools (year 1)

Sheboygan 7th grade teacher Tina Thone created a lesson unit focusing on Native American boarding schools for her Integrated Language Arts course. The unit will help students to understand the forced acculturation of Native Americans in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and why boarding schools were created in locations all over the United States with the purpose of "civilizing" American Indian youth. From this experience students will gain respect from differences in cultures, and learn to become active questioners and critical thinkers when analyzing primary documents.

John Thompson -- First Nations People in the Age of Jackson (year 1)

Mishicot 5th grade teacher John Thompson created a lesson plan that will help students to examine the First Nations in North America regionally, historically, and culturally. Through historical research, the construction of dioramas and the development of an oral presentation, students will immerse themselves in a study of how First Nations people lived during the period between 1600-1860 and how the First Nations' world changed as they encountered European colonial groups and post-Revolutionary Americans.
