File Civil War Dissent; Emancipation Proclamation
Nathan Werner's lesson unit seeks to explore dissent during the Civil War, and asks students to decide what they believe was Abraham Lincoln’s true intentions for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. The students participate in many activities, which include reading alternative views on the Emancipation Proclamation & Copperhead accounts of the happenings of the Civil War, creating a poster on whether Abraham Lincoln was or wasn’t the Great Emancipator, and the culminating activity of a mock trial of Abraham Lincoln as The Great Emancipator.
