Athens High School teacher Rhonda Stange's lesson unit will help her US history students to examine the power and role of the presidency, the roles of Congress and the Supreme Court and also the issue of individual liberty balanced against the public’s safety during particular times of national unrest. In particular, the unit will focus on the pros and cons behind Abraham Lincoln's suspension of the writ of habeas corpus during the Civil War.

Mary Study has created a lesson plan for high school students that explores the topic of freedom of Wisconsinites during the Civil War era, specifically focusing on draft riots and copperhead sentiments as a platform for inquiry and discovery. Instructional methods will include interpretation of various primary and secondary sources, reflective writing, class discussion, and informal debates. Students will explore cause-and-effect relationships, investigate causes of conflict, and compare and contrast various ideas.Students will participate in lively discussion, informal debate, analysis of primary documents, and reflective writing.
