Included are three files that contain several short readings that Lawrence University professor Jerald Podair would like attendees to read for his July 23rd, 12:30 p.m. session. (They seem like a lot, but only actually total 25 pages.) Readings include: (1) John Hope Franklin, “The Emancipation Proclamation: The Decision and the Writing,” in Sean Wilentz, ed., The Best American History Essays on Lincoln (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2009), 191-205. (2) Letter from General George B. McClellan to Abraham Lincoln, July 7, 1862. (3) Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles’ account of a conversation during a carriage ride with Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward on July 13, 1862. (4) Letter from Lincoln to Horace Greeley, August 22, 1862. (5) Account of the meeting of President Lincoln with the Cabinet, September 22, 1862, in the diary of Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase. (6) Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863. (7) Letter from Abraham Lincoln to General John A. McClernand, January 8, 1863.
