Summer Institute -- Required Readings

Folder contains readings files and links to readings for the various plenary and breakout sessions. We strongly encourage you read as many of these articles, essays and excerpts as possible prior to July 19th.

File David Kennedy Book -- "Freedom from Fear"
Reading Assignment for the Summer Institute. (Also, note that UW-Milwaukee professor Glen Jeansonne suggests Chapters 1-4 of the Kennedy book as recommended reading for his session on Herbert Hoover.)

Here is a reading that Jim Feldman would like the teacher participants to complete prior to the summer institute: Hidden transcripts in the Chippewa Treaty Rights struggle: A twice told story race, resistance, and the politics of power. Please note that participants need to use their UW Oshkosh email username and password in order to access the reading. It's the same username and password participants used to upload their lesson plan projects into the D2L Site's "Drop Box."

Folder Glen Jeansonne Session -- (Herbert Hoover) Great Engineer Fights the Great Depression
This folder contains a Wall Street Journal article entitled, "Fans of the 31st President..." where Glen Jeansonne is quoted; and Chapter 8 from Glen Jeansonne's book "A Time of Paradox."
Folder James Grossman Session -- "Great Migration"
Folder contains various readings that University of Chicago historian highly recommends that teachers read, prior to his "Great Migration" discussion during the Chicago field trip. Obviously, teachers attending the field trip should read these files, but all teachers are welcome to complete these readings.
Document Lisa Poupart Session -- "Teaching Wisconsin First Nations History..."
There is no required reading. However, Lisa Poupart strongly encourages session attendees to skim through either Patti Loew's book "Indian Nations of Wisconsin (high school teachers), or Patti Loew's book "Native Peoples of Wisconsin" (middle or elementary school teachers) prior to the session. In order to obtain either book, contact Mike Derr.
Folder Don Dingledine Session -- Great Depression Reportage
Don has asked participants to review four short pdf files, which include 3 short texts and two photographs. All are included in those folder. Please review them and print them out for this session.
Folder Jonathan Kasparek Session -- "Populists and Progressives..."

Professor James Coates has prepared a handout for his Sunday evening presentation that includes an outline of his talking points and a list of recommended readings for this topic. Feel free to bring this handout to the presentation. We will also bring copies to the session.

(They seem like a lot, but only actually total 25 pages.)
