She has a BA in Sociology from Texas Tech University, an MA in Public Policy with a concentration in Women's Studies from George Washington University and a PhD in Women's Studies from the University of York in England.

She previously worked as the Education Coordinator for the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum, which is home of the National Woman's Party (the militant suffragists portrayed in the film Iron Jawed Angels), and as the Public Policy Assistant for the Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy & Action.

During the course of her PhD, she became active in roller derby. For her dissertation, she utilized theories on the institution of heterosexuality to conduct a study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. You can see her talk about her research in the roller derby documentary:  Derby Baby!
