Group Purpose

The purpose of this group is to appropriately assign technical projects for completion keeping in mind the mission of UW Oshkosh.

Project Prioritization Guidelines

• Process overview:

• Representatives from the SIS and APBS Implementation Teams consolidate and then prioritize projects.

• The top tier projects are further categorized in terms of “scope” and complexity/difficulty.”  The technical staff, with input from the project requestors, is responsible for this process.

• Representatives from the Implementation Teams again review the prioritized list.

• The prioritized list is sent to the Enterprise Executive Committee (EEC) for approval.  The EEC may add/delete/change projects and/or reorder priorities.

• The EEC and the Implementation Teams review the status of the top tier projects monthly and reprioritize as needed.

• The EEC has the authority to add, delete, or change project priorities at any time.

• Guidelines for prioritizing projects: 

• Is the project aligned with the University’s mission, vision, and strategic directions?

• Does the project make existing processes or procedures more efficient?
  (There should be identifiable cost savings in dollars and/or human effort.)

• Does the project make existing processes or procedures more effective?
  (Better results are achieved by the improved process or procedure.)

• Does the project improve/enhance or protect the University's mission, vision, or strategic directions?

• Is the project needed to avoid or protect the University from a potentially serious financial or legal situation?

• Guidelines for determining resources, scope, and complexity/difficulty of projects:

• Scope

• Large - Projects that take several months to complete.

• Medium - Projects that take several weeks to complete.

• Small - Projects that take several days to complete.

• Minimal - Projects that take several hours to complete. When an individual believes that an existing program or procedure requires a minimal modification, s/he should contact a senior programmer/analyst. The analyst can quickly determine if a modification can be made immediately. If the request is more involved, the individual will be asked to send a request to a member of the Project Prioritization Working Group.

• Complexity/difficulty

• Exceedingly complex to develop and/or maintain - Not usually recommended.

• Moderate complexity - complicating aspects of the project often surface during the detailed analysis and development phases of these projects.

• Low complexity - rarely are complicating factors discovered in the development of these projects.
