Desire 2 Learn

Desire2Learn (D2L) provides a way for you to include online materials
for your classes. If you can get onto the Internet, you can use D2L's
graphical, point-and-click interface to seamlessly incorporate learning
materials from word processing, audio and video, presentation files,
and more. D2L also provides flexible administrative options for
customizing course content and managing students online. It includes
advanced communication, assessment, and reporting functions. D2L can be
used for web-enhanced, fully online, or hybrid (classroom + online)
courses. This seminar is 3 hours long.

Desire 2 Learn Advanced

Advanced D2L is a 3-hour class covering collaboration and assessment
tools. During the first hour, you will learn about managing groups,
creating discussion forums, and using the chat room. During the second
hour, we'll explore how to create online quizzes and surveys, and during the
third hour you will work with the gradebook. During this 3-hour seminar, you will work on getting your first course up.

*Note* You must bring your syllabus along on a disk/CD/USB drive.

Put your syllabus in D2L

This seminar will teach you how to get your syllabus in D2L, and it will also cover basic course setup.

*Note* You must bring your syllabus along on a disk/CD/USB drive.

A Taste of D2L (over lunch)

Join us over lunch to learn about one specific area of D2L. Bring your lunch; dessert will be provided. These sessions are open to everyone-you do not need to attend D2L training first. Reservations are not required.

Gradebook

The gradebook is the most popular feature for students. By using it, you can let students know their grade-wherever and whenever they want to know! We'll show you a sample gradebook and help you set up your own. Please bring a copy of your grading policy with you (including your grading scale, items, and points/weights).

Dropbox

Business professor Ben Arbaugh will show how he's used the dropbox to easily collect, grade, and return assignments to students. We'll also show you how to set up dropboxes in your course sites.

Groups

D2L allows you to create small groups for discussions and projects. The best part is that D2L can automatically create the groups and assign the students! You'll learn how to set up groups as well as how to assign them to private discussion areas. We'll also show how to restrict content and to display the gradebook by group.

Communication

Reach out and touch your students (virtually, that is)! D2L's communication tools include the discussion board, chat, email, and the pager. We'll cover discussions in depth, and touch on the others.

Quizzes and Surveys

Learn how to use D2L's powerful assessment and feedback tools. Please bring 5-10 quiz questions with you (printed or on disk).

Customize your course homepage

Learn how to customize your course homepages. You can include a photo of yourself, specialized links, search tools, a Word of the Day, and more! We'll have some of these "widgets" available for you, as well as show you how to create your own.
