UWO student explores financial opportunity among generations

UWO student explores financial opportunity among generations

James Gaffney, of Appleton, became interested in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh when he learned that the College of Business supported the educational path he was interested in. “I’ve been trying to get into analytics, so when I found out that UW Oshkosh had an analytics minor, I decided to jump on it,” he said.

As a junior majoring in information systems, Gaffney undertook a research project with UWO assistant economics professor Joshua Foster. The two of them applied for and earned a grant from the Office of Student Research and Creative Activity in order to explore the differences in financial opportunity among generations.

Although it is a commonly-held belief that certain generations had an easier or harder time accumulating wealth than others, Gaffney said the evidence he collected doesn’t point to any such conclusion.

“I don’t believe that there’s necessarily a generation that had it any easier or any harder. I think we just all have our own hardships and our own things that make it a little easier to live in the generations we live in,” Gaffney said.

UW Oshkosh associate director for student involvement elected to international college unions board

A leader at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh recently began a two-year term on the Association for College Unions International (ACUI) Board of Trustees.

Missy Burgess

Missy Burgess, associate director for student involvement at UWO, said in a statement of candidacy that the world has changed dramatically in the last nearly three years and ACUI has the opportunity to be a thought leader on the “new normal” and to stay relevant for its membership.

“It is an honor to be selected by my peers to represent our members at this level,” Burgess said. “I am excited for the challenge and opportunity to shape our strategic future.”

Burgess said conversations of diversity and inclusion are pressing matters for the world as well as ACUI and leaders will need to look internally to make sure policies and practices create an association that is welcoming to all. Ongoing educational opportunities for members will be part of the conversation.

As a board member, Burgess will actively engage with ACUI strategies, finances and governance to further enhance the community and lead the future of ACUI and the college union field.

UWO is one of 450 institutional ACUI members from around the United States and abroad.

Burgess, who has been at UWO since October 2013,  earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, a master’s degree in college student personnel from Kansas State University, and a doctor of philosophy in educational leadership from the University of North Dakota.

Top notch Abby O’Neil earns January STAR Award

Abby O’Neil, a University of Wisconsin Oshkosh custodian, has been named the recipient of the January 2023 STAR Award.

She was nominated by Cindy Schultz, an administrative assistant in journalism department:

“Abby is the best. We wound up having her temporarily assigned to Sage Hall third floor in February 2022. She hit the ground running. We had someone in place prior to her that was not doing their job. Within eight hours, we found a vast difference — everything already was starting to look so clean.

“Abby brings a positive attitude to her job. She is always incredibly helpful and is always communicating with the department if we have any specific needs. She always has a smile on her face and is so very easy to communicate with.

“This was an email that I sent to her supervisor recently: ‘I just want to say THANK YOU for allowing Ms. Abby O’Neil to manage the third floor of Sage Hall. She is the BEST!!! I love her energy, her desire to make and keep this place looking great and her attitude! Absolutely TOP NOTCH!!!’

“We just recently found out that we get to keep Abby on a more ‘permanent’ basis. I LOVE that we have been able to develop a relationship with our custodian. They truly what make this University work so smoothly! We would be lost without them!”

UWO’s Jay Anderson earns December STAR Award

Jay Anderson, who works in the College of Letters and Science Dean’s Office at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, has been named the recipient of the December 2022 STAR Award.

Anderson was nominated by Sarah Adelson from the Cooperative Academic Partnership Program office:

“Jay was invaluable during the COLS Dean’s Office move to Sage Hall. She worked in detail to find each faculty/staff member an appropriate office and to make sure everyone’s needs were met. At times it truly seemed like a puzzle, moving people here and there for the right fit. She put a lot of physical labor into the packing and organizing of the old office, making sure things could be unpacked easily once they were moved over. All of this work on top of her already busy duties with the COLS Dean’s Office and CAPP! Our move would not have been nearly as simple without Jay’s dedication and hard work. Awesome job Jay!

“During the pandemic transition to online, Jay was also vital to the process of moving many things to digital. She put in a lot of extra effort and took meetings with several outside offices to help the Dean’s Office and faculty with the transition, and the new processes that resulted from the transition. On top of just the COLS side, Jay was also still working with the CAPP Office, digitizing our processes as well, most notably moving the new adjunct application process (which was entirely paper based) to fully online routing.”
