From the artistic to the analytical, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh undergraduate and graduate students will show off their abilities at the 15th-annual Celebration of Scholarship April 23-24.

The juried Student Research and Creative Activities Event at Reeve Memorial Union, 748 Algoma Blvd., will highlight the breadth and depth of student activities through scientific posters and oral presentations as well as the visual and performing arts.

“It’s important to celebrate scholarship because we, as a university, value the creation of knowledge as well as the transmission of knowledge,” said Linda Freed, director of the grants and faculty development office. “This event is a way to generate cross-departmental conversations, which stimulate new ideas.

“Moreover, our students do good stuff, and we’re proud of them!”

The Spring 2008 Honors Thesis Symposium will kick off the event from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23.

Graduate students Stephanie Adkins, Leslie Cormack, Cole Edwards and Julie Leibold
will present “Civic Education: How to Increase Civic Participation,” “Life Renewed, Not Death Ensued: The Decadent Desire to Fall,” “Evidence of a Fossil Bacterial Community Preserved in Phosphate Minerals of the 1.85 Billion-Year-Old Baraga Group, Michigan” and “The Application of Nanomaterials to Solar Energy,” respectively.

Among the full slate of activities scheduled for April 24, two kinesiology and health students will present a choreographed wheelchair dance, and a pair of music majors will offer an original composition for viola and piano. An art student will show a series of figurative oil paintings that challenge negative perceptions and images of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Research posters will cover the gamut from the antiviral properties of cranberries to the economic indicators of housing demand to the relationship between obesity and physical activity in children.

From 3 to 4 p.m., Robert Dott, an award-winning Earth history expert, will speak about a recent field trip he led in the Andes Mountains and the geology and natural history of the Tierra del Fuego region.

Scholarships will be awarded for the winning entries during the Provost’s Awards Ceremony/Reception in Reeve Union Ballroom from 4 to 5 p.m. The UW Oshkosh Film Society Blowout 2008 will follow in Reeve Union Theatre from 5:30 to 7 p.m. More than a dozen student-produced films will be presented.
