The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh received $74,990 from WiSys Technology Foundation, Inc. for the “Exploration of Bioactive Compounds from Cranberries for Antiviral Nutraceutical Potential.” Project directors are Brant Kedrowski, chemistry department, and Teri Shors, biology/microbiology department. WiSys Technology Foundation, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization that works with UW System and supports development in research and technology.

Victoria Beck, Michael Lenza and Christopher Rose, criminal justice, contributed to a new publication comprised of three volumes, which will be released in October or November. These faculty members worked with co-authors to write three long chapters over the summer.  The publication, Transnational Criminology Manual, will be added to the library of every major university in Europe.  The publication will be released in English and French and is published by a foremost European publishing company, Wolf Legal Publishers.

Tyler Boddy is one of eight recipients of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship will attend the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention in Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 14-19.

The Oshkosh Student Nurses Association held its third annual Celebration of Life Dinner on Nov. 2, at 5:30 p.m. The dinner was a time for community members who have cancer, their caregivers and survivors of cancer to gather to learn about living with the disease. The event was held in Reeve Union and included a complementary dinner and presentations.

College of Business students from the student-managed endowment fund visited the Madison Investment Advisors, Inc. (MIA) to learn about the financial industry. Six members attended the visit and met with UWO alumnus and MIA Managing Director Mike Yaktus (BBA ’83) along with other MIA staff. Students who visited MIA include Justin Rose, Garrett Van Wyk, Michael Johnson, Bryan Nudelbacker, Aaron Spaulding and Jon Bakovka.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh received $231,588 as a sub award from the University of Minnesota for the project, “Phylogenetic and Comparative Studies of Tiger Moths (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea).” The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and Jennifer Zaspel, biology/microbiology, is project director.

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named UWO  junior and goalkeeper Brittany Walder Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 25-31.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is starting a new program to provide businesses with information on the economy in the New North. The Survey Success Center, which is part of the Business Success Center, will conduct quarterly surveys to establish economic benchmarks in four areas.  The surveys will give information on how businesses compare to other businesses in the area as well as help businesses prepare for the next generation of workers.

The Advance-Titan, Titan TV and WRST-FM all won awards at the National College Media Convention in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 27-31. More than 2,000 participants from colleges in the United States and Canada attended the event. The Advance-Titan won best of show and took first place in its category. The paper won first out of 30 entrants for best weekly newspaper from a four-year institution for its Oct. 21 issue. Titan TV won best entertainment program and best comedy for “Tales From A College Dorm.” The station also won best technical production for “Titan Forest,” and best special broadcast for “Firetales.” WRST-FM won an award for best sports reporting for “Sports Update 5571”.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has received $10,000 from the Kikkoman Foods Foundation for the Wisconsin Youth Leadership Academy. The UW Oshkosh Foundation had a crucial role in getting the support for the project. Chris DeIuliis, continuing education and extension, is project director.

The men’s cross country team competed in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in Colfax, Wis., Oct. 30.  The team took third place but finished only 24 points behind the winner UW-Stevens Point. Top runners for UW Oshkosh were sophomores John Dewitt and Jordan King. The team’s next even is the Division III Midwest Regional in Rock Island, Ill., Nov. 13.

Michael Skivington participated in the two day strategic planning meeting for the Division of International Special Education and Services in Washington, D.C., Oct. 21-22. The main purpose of the meeting was to refocus effort on educating students with disabilities. The DISES is part of the Council for Exceptional Children, and Skivington has served as chair of the membership committee for DISES over the last two years. Board members in attendance came from many different parts of the globe, including Israel, Qatar and Mexico.

Christy Cazzola didn’t take the easy road after high school. Cazzola, who took first place at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Nov. 4, turned down opportunities to run cross country after high school and decided to move out on her own at 18.
