Chancellor Richard Wells has designated Nov. 1-7, 2010 UW Oshkosh Nontraditional Student Week. To help celebrate and bring together this diverse population, UW Oshkosh will host activities that showcase services for and successes of adult nontraditional students.

Chancellor Wells’ proclamation coincides with National Nontraditional Student Week and draws attention to the nearly 3,000 adult nontraditional students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at UW Oshkosh.

Showing higher education is accessible

On Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, UW Oshkosh will hold New U, an adult student information session and education expo, from 4-7 p.m. in the Reeve Memorial Union Ballroom.

Attendees will meet instructors and student service staff, explore possible areas of study and career resources, and learn about applying for admissions and financial aid.

A variety of offices and departments will attend the education expo to show the assortment of programs and services available for adult nontraditional students. Additionally, representatives from area two-year, technical and four-year public institutions will attend and provide participants with information on additional education options in Northeast Wisconsin.

New U is part of a collaborative effort among 11 public institutions in Northeast Wisconsin, which are lead by the Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance, or NEW ERA. Each institution will host their own information session for adult nontraditional students. To see a full listing of events, visit www.neweraonline.org.

Enjoying the Camaraderie

On Thursday, Nov. 4 from 9 – 11 a.m., the Adult Nontraditional Student Resource (ANSR) office will host an informal open house with coffee and treats.

Attendees will be able to meet and greet in the ANSR Office.  Students are encouraged to share their successes, ask questions and explore opportunities.

The ANSR Office provides information and support to undergraduate and graduate students. Student Mentors and office staff give their one-on-one attention.  Students can find help in pre-advising and pre-counseling, locating academic assistance, scholarships, and other connections on campus.

Honoring the accomplishments of adult nontraditional students

UW Oshkosh will also host the induction ceremony for the Omega Kappa chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda honor society. ASL is a unique honor society that recognizes adult students who juggle responsibilities at home and work while maintaining outstanding academic records.

The induction ceremony will be Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at 6 p.m. in Reeve Memorial Union room 202.

An invitation was extended to the top 20 percent of all adult nontraditional students who are enrolled in at least six credits, are undergraduate students seeking their first degree, have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, have taken at least 12  liberal studies credits  and at least 24 credits at UW Oshkosh.

Recognizing adult students’ contributions

In a memo to Dr. Karen Heikel, Assistant Vice Chancellor of the division of Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement at UW Oshkosh, Chancellor Wells said,  “I would be honored to proclaim the first week of November as UW Oshkosh Nontraditional Student Week.”

Ruth Freiburger, director of the ANSR Office said she feels this declaration is “a supreme opportunity to recognize the hard work and contribution of returning adult students and the value they bring to our university community.”
