The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has selected the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Willy Kaul as its 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Midwest Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.

Kaul is unbeaten in five races this indoor season, with three victories in the 3,000-meter run and two in the 5,000-meter run. He entered last weekend’s (March 14-15) NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in Ada, Ohio, as the top seed in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:22.99.

At the WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship held Feb. 29-March 1 in Superior, Kaul won both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs with times of 8:37.95 and 14:43.73, respectively. His efforts helped UW Oshkosh place third in the team standings with 104.5 points.

Last year at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in Terra Haute, Ind., Kaul finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:47.50 while helping the distance medley relay team post a winning time of 10:01.85. His performances helped the Titans finished third in the team standings with 43.5 points.

Other NCAA Division III Men’s Midwest Region citations went to Michael Bina of North Central College (Ill.) as the Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and Roger Haynes of Monmouth College (Ill.) as the Indoor Coach of the Year.
