University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students are encouraged to submit one-act original play entries for the 2018 Student Playwriting Competition.

One-act play entries must be 18- to 30-pages, submitted in play script format. All UW Oshkosh students are eligible to enter.

“The 20th anniversary of the student playwriting contest will be celebrated with a special evening of events on May 2, 2018,” said Richard Kalinoski, UW Oshkosh theatre professor and director. “This particular year, two plays and two playwrights will be chosen. A special guest will be present—the first winner of the contest in 1998.”

Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 30, 2018, to the office of the Fredric March Theatre. Only hard copies will be accepted.

Winners will receive a cash prize, a public reading of the play and a framed poster. The contest offers students a chance to see and hear their plays read by experienced student actors. Several past winners have gone on to writing in professional environments, according to Kalinoski.

Hannah Clark, a Fond du Lac native and first-year theatre student at UW Oshkosh, was chosen as winner of the 2017 Student Playwriting Contest. Her play, Icarus, examined the dilemma of a bright young woman who has a particular talent for engineering and invention. A mystery evolved when the main character discovered that the machine she has been creating has been sabotaged by someone in her family.
