Vehicle idling, terrace tree planting, residential energy conservation and advancing the city’s “bicycle friendly” efforts will be discussed at a meeting Dec. 4 of the Oshkosh Sustainability Advisory Committee.

Open to the public, the meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in Room 404 at City Hall, 215 Church Ave.

Students who are part of University of Wisconsin Oshkosh professor Jim Feldman’s environmental studies program will be presenting their recommendations for advancing the city of Oshkosh’s sustainability efforts.

The students have drafted four ordinances that they are recommending the city adopt. The proposed ordinances will be reviewed by the Sustainability Advisory Board and eventually by members of the Oshkosh Common Council.

“I appreciate the work they’re doing,” said Steve Wiley, assistant city planner, about the UW Oshkosh students. “They are getting real-life experience with stakeholders, elected officials, staff members and the community. I hope they can take something away from (the experience).”

Wiley said earlier this year, students were behind an Oshkosh beekeeping ordinance that was adopted in spring.

“They did research, public outreach and came up with a model ordinance,” he said, noting that the proposal was addressed and finalized by city staff, was sent to Council and ultimately was passed by a unanimous vote.

“They got results,” he said, about UW Oshkosh students advancing the city beekeeping ordinance with the Sustainability Advisory Board.
