Toby Bares

Toby Bares, a former University of Wisconsin Oshkosh soccer coach and the current assistant director of operations and sports clubs at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, coaches a girls soccer team that recently competed in the Donosti Cup international soccer tournament in San Sebastian, Spain. Claire Staats, a social studies and Spanish education/international studies major from Milwaukee, and Christian Vanseth, who is majoring in Spanish education and English as a second language, have spent 10 weeks this summer teaching English in Chile through the Languages Open Doors program. Druscilla Scribner

UW Oshkosh’s national political science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha, was named one of the Best Chapters by the national organization. Of the 700 chapters, only nine are recognized each year. The UW Oshkosh chapter was recognized among schools with enrollments of 6,000 to 15,000 students. Students inducted into the society in 2009 included David Barouski, Paul Beach, Leanne Brown, Aaron Campbell, Amy Gearhart, David Gresens, Bryan Hahn, Kathryn Jefferson, Kraig Oppriecht, Lisa Riedel, Adam Snyder and
Ashley Wangberg. The faculty advisor is Druscilla Scribner.

Thomas Fischer, College of Education and Human Services, received $5,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for the project “Developing Collaborative Teaching and Learning Partnerships through Co-teaching.”

Jerri-Mae Astolfi

Greg Kleinheinz

Greg Kleinheinz, biology and microbiology, is the director or co-director of several projects that received grants this week: $12,985 from Vilas County Public Health Department for “DATCP Facility Inspections”; $9,600 for “Clean Boats Clean Waters Programs for Eagle River, Little St. Germain, Long Lake, Big Sand Lake and Unified Lower Eagle River; $9,000 from Waushara County Health Department for “Waushara County Inspections” (with Reynee Kachur, biology and microbiology); and $18,500 from the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, for “Beach Sanitary Survey — Bayfield, Ashland, Door and Manitowoc Counties, Wisconsin” (with Colleen McDermott, biology and microbiology).

Scott Beyer

Scott Beyer, a professor of finance and insurance, will be the guest speaker at the September meeting of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter Society’s Wisconsin-Fox Valley Chapter on Sept. 15 in Appleton. He will present “Preparing and Attracting Talent for the Insurance Industry.”
