Headshot of Emily RuckUniversity of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumna Emily Ruck ’16, received the 2016 Capital Credit Union Doing Right Reward. The contest honors college seniors who dedicate their time to helping others and the community. Ruck was one of five finalists.

Ruck, who graduated in May with a major in social work, was nominated by Nicole Bellcorelli, volunteerism program adviser in Reeve Union.

“Emily is incredibly professional and provides great customer service,”Bellcorelli said. “Her role and the extra effort she puts into it has helped countless groups over the past three years.”

For Ruck, her time as a Titan Volunteer and as a volunteer program assistant led her to the decision to pursue social work.
“Helping others has always been a passion of mine,” Ruck said. “I have been involved in the community since high school, which is now continuing in my professional life. I love connecting with others and being a positive influence.”
Ruck was recently hired as an employment consultant at Clarity Care in Appleton, a position she said her time volunteering, being involved on campus and her major prepared her for.
“I have made a lot of connections in both the Oshkosh and Appleton communities through my internship through the social work program, and my position as the volunteerism program assistant, which will complement my current position,” Ruck said. “The social work program also allowed me to develop great interpersonal skills, as well as acting in an ethical and professional manner to provide services. It is great to see my professional values also align with my personal values to ultimately help others.”
Bellcorelli said Ruck’s dedication to the field of social work is clear.
“When we hosted a poverty simulation last year, Emily went to classes and worked with the social work student group to get their members information on how to be a part of the program,” Bellcorelli said. “I love the chance to work with students who truly know they have found the right field of study and Emily is one of them. She will go on to be successful in whatever comes next for her.”
Ruck said she loved networking with community agencies and services, as well as getting to know volunteers during her time at UW Oshkosh.
“All of the opportunities and experiences I have acquired from UWO have shaped who I am today,” Ruck said. “From the Titan Volunteers executive position, to serving as a trip leader on an Alternative Break trip to New York, to being employed within the volunteerism department, I have been offered various diverse and exceptional learning experiences. I would encourage each student to take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself, because you never know the value it may entail!”
In addition to being a finalist for the Capital Credit Union Doing Right Reward, Ruck recently received a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.
