Beginning fall 2016, students will be able to declare a Global Scholar Option, a 12-credit self-directed course of study open to all UWO students who wish to distinguish themselves as emerging global citizens prepared to navigate an increasingly complex and interdependent world.

“This really creates an opportunity for students, in a self-directed way, to make themselves as globally distinctive as they wish,” said Franca Barricelli, associate dean in the College of Letters and Science at UW Oshkosh.

Global Scholars create their own pathway through their coursework to gain knowledge of the world, address global challenges and build their cultural competence. That path begins in the University Studies Program (USP) with a Global Citizenship (GC) course –what was formerly a Non-Western (NW) course, continues with nine credits of upper division Global Scholar (GS) courses, and includes a hands-on global experience such as study abroad, service learning, alternative break, a clinical placement or faculty-student collaborative research.

“In sum, the Global Scholar Option is designed to give our students a leg up,”said Druscilla Scribner, University Fellow for Global Studies and chair of the political science department. “It signals that graduates have invested in the global and cultural knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to navigate a complicated and interdependent world.”

Global Scholars will be distinguished at graduation and the designation will be documented on their final transcripts from the University.

Students interested in becoming a UW Oshkosh Global Scholar should meet with their adviser in the Undergraduate Advising Resource Center (UARC) or faculty adviser to outline a pathway through their major that will help them achieve the Global Scholar distinction.
