Joel Edson, longtime University of Wisconsin Oshkosh leader, died Nov. 30.

Edson came to UW Oshkosh in 1970 as assistant to the administrative vice president. After 30 years of service to UW Oshkosh, Edson retired from his leadership role in 2000. Edson served in many roles at UW Oshkosh, including budget/controller, director of budget and executive director of administrative services—the position he held for most of his tenure.

During his years at Wisconsin State University at Oshkosh/UW Oshkosh, Edson had many achievements during a time when UW Oshkosh was a fast-growing, changing campus. In 1985, he was the recipient of the UW Oshkosh Outstanding Service Award—for his role in attempts to provide access and service to the region.

Award documents state: “In presenting this award to Mr. Joel C. Edson, the University most particularly wishes to commend him for his uncanny understanding of academic priorities, his unrelenting commitment to the interests of our academic community and his continuing concern for our programs.”

Upon his retirement, then-Chancellor John Kerrigan called Edson’s efforts at UW Oshkosh “nothing short of remarkable.”

Today, Tom Sonnleinter, vice chancellor for administrative services, said Edson is remembered at UW Oshkosh for his role in the master plan that was developed in the mid- 1990s. Sonnleitner remembers Edson as a dear colleague and friend.

“So many of Joel’s plans have come to fruition over the years,” Sonnleitner said. “His legacy will live on for a very long time as someone who really helped shape the UW Oshkosh campus.”

Chancellor Emeritus Edward M. Penson recalled Edson’s loyal and caring nature and referred to him as “reliable, patient and honest.”

“With 15 years of experience as a university president or chancellor, and after 40 years as a consultant for more than 395 university presidents/chancellors, if I had to pick the most reliable, capable administrative team member, it would be Joel Edson,” Penson said. “He was extremely loyal to his colleagues, family, church and his bosses. He will be remembered.”

Edson’s obituary said his job at UW Oshkosh was one “he really enjoyed until his retirement in 2000.”

A memorial was held for Edson Dec. 5. Edson’s full obituary can be found here.
