The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh recently received a U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant for a STEM Student Support Services (SSS) program.

STEM-SSS provides individualized academic advising, career and degree guidance, college success skill development, personal support, and financial aid/financial literacy information. Students also receive assistance with obtaining internships and undergraduate research opportunities and explore graduate school options. Scholarships are available to second- and third-year students meeting eligibility guidelines and who actively participate in the program.

A traditional SSS program has served students at UW Oshkosh since the mid-1970s, and the STEM-SSS program was founded in August 2015.

STEM-SSS serves first generation and/or limited-income undergraduate students who are pursuing a major in any STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) or health science field. 120 students are served annually by the program.

Jessi Billings and Jason Herman serve as the advisers for STEM-SSS with offices on the second floor of the Multicultural Education Center (MEC).

Headshot of Nancy Harrison“The goal of SSS is to retain and graduate students,” Nancy Harrison, the director of the STEM-SSS and the traditional SSS program, said. “Both the STEM-SSS program and the traditional SSS program target first-generation students. The SSS staff guides and teaches students how to navigate college successfully and prepares them for life beyond college.”

Students can apply to the STEM-SSS program by downloading an application form and turning it into the Student Support Services office in the Center for Equity and Diversity or at the STEM-SSS offices at the MEC. Additional information about both the STEM-SSS program and the traditional SSS program can be found at stemsss.uwosh.edu or sss.uwosh.edu or by emailing uwosss@uwosh.edu or calling (920) 424-1310.
