After five years in the role of UW Oshkosh police chief and more than seven years on our campus police force, Joseph LeMire will leave the University for a new opportunity.

LeMire has accepted the role of chief of university police for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He will begin his role at UWM in mid-July.

“I look forward to the new challenge in my career but I will sincerely miss the people at UW Oshkosh and especially the outstanding staff and CSOs at University Police,” LeMire said. “This has been a great seven years and I thank everyone that helps keep UW Oshkosh safe and made my time here so rewarding.”

LeMire joined UW Oshkosh as University Police lieutenant in 2008 and was appointed to the role of police chief in 2010.

“Joe has been instrumental in developing University Police into a comprehensive community university policing model that is seen as best practice,” UW Oshkosh Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Petra Roter said. “His tireless leadership and advocacy for campus and community safety have been invaluable.”

Throughout the years, LeMire has developed collaborative relationships with local law enforcement for mutual assistance and cooperative programs. This included working with the City of Oshkosh district attorney to create a UW Oshkosh Safety Zone to protect students in the areas immediately adjacent to the campus.

“Joe is a great champion of campus and community safety,” UW Oshkosh Chancellor Andrew Leavitt said. “Among other great work he really advanced our Community Service Officer Safewalk program that has helped countless students travel throughout campus safely.”

UW Oshkosh University Police Lt. Chris Tarmann will act as interim police chief while a national search is conducted.

“Lt. Tarmann has been in his role for more than five years and has been heavily involved in all aspects of the department,” Roter said. “We remain in good hands with Lt. Tarmann as interim police chief for our campus.”
