For the 31st consecutive year the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Model United Nations team once again won Outstanding Delegation Awards at National Model United Nations, the world’s largest Model UN, extending its record winning streak.

UW Oshkosh received two Outstanding Delegation awards, the third consecutive year that UW Oshkosh students represented two countries and received two Outstanding Delegation Awards, the highest level of award. The winning UW Oshkosh students represented the Cote d’Ivoire and Samoa at the 2015 National Model United Nations held from March 29-April 2, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In addition to the team awards, UW Oshkosh delegates were named as the Outstanding Delegates in five of the nine committees on which the Cote d’Ivoire was represented, and in one of the six committees on which Samoa was represented. UW students also won numerous position paper awards.

The week-long 2015 National Model United Nations involved more than 5,500 students competitors from more than 200 universities in 38 countries on six continents. Student delegates debated and negotiated agreements regarding a wide range of current issues and world events from the agenda of the real UN, covering political, economic, and social topics, using the same rooms and facilities in which the global diplomats at the United Nations negotiate agreements on these same issues. The concluding General Assembly was held in the Great Hall at UN Headquarters. The students were addressed by the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Jan Eliasson.

Participating students are judged on their diplomatic and negotiating skills, their ability to write legal documents that embody the agreements reached, the accuracy with which they represent their respective nations, their knowledge of global issues, their familiarity with the United Nations system and its procedures, practices, bodies, and committees, and their speaking ability.

“UW Oshkosh students continued the record of excellence established and maintained over 31 years at the world’s largest Model United Nations. UW Oshkosh students clearly stood out among their peers from universities throughout the world in their knowledge of international affairs and the diplomatic process,” Kenneth J. Grieb, coordinator of International Studies and faculty adviser for the UW Oshkosh Model United Nations Team, said.
