The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Theatre Department proudly announces their upcoming Winter Fringe production of the play, “8.”

The play chronicles Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the federal case for marriage equality filed by the American Foundation for Equal Rights challenging Proposition 8, which eliminated gay and lesbian couples’ right to marry in California in 2008.  The play is produced as a staged reading using actual words from trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama, and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families. In 2013, the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the Perry case secured marriage equality in California.

UW Oshkosh students, faculty, and staff are collaborating to perform this thought-provoking evening of readers’ theatre. Talkback dialogues following each of the performances will be led by members of the campus community.

This production of “8” is especially timely. On January 16, 2015, the Supreme Court agreed to review the case of DeBoer v Snyder in which the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ban on same sex marriages in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The Supreme Court will likely hear oral argument in April 2015 and make its decision in June 2015.

“8” runs March 12, 13 and 14 in the Experimental Theatre at UW Oshkosh; nightly performances are at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call (920) 424-4417 or visit uwosh.edu/theatre. Ticket prices are $14 for general admission, $11 for senior citizen or alumni and $5 for UWO students with ID. The box office will be open the week of the production, Monday through Friday, noon until 4 p.m. and evenings of performance 6:30 until 7:30 p.m.
