The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Model United Nations team continued its winning streak at the 55th annual Midwest Model United Nations Competition in St. Louis by once again winning more awards than any other university.

In the General Assembly, UW Oshkosh students won two of five Outstanding Delegation Awards and two of three Honorable Mentions. In the Economic and Social Council Plenary, UW Oshkosh won one of two Outstanding Delegation Awards and one of two Honorable Mentions. UW Oshkosh students also won ten Outstanding Delegate Awards in the General Assembly committees, six committee Honorable Mentions and seven Outstanding Position Paper Awards.

Delegates from UW Oshkosh also swept the Delegates’ Choice Awards, granted by vote of the participating students, winning in each of the four General Assembly committees and in ECOSOC.

UW Oshkosh students represented seven nations at the competition, which involved more than 700 students from 46 universities in thirteen states representing 74 nations. The competition was held from Feb. 17-22, 2015.

The UW Oshkosh delegations representing Bangladesh and Italy received Outstanding Delegation Awards in the General Assembly, while Panama and Portugal received Honorable Mentions. In ECOSOC Plenary the winning Oshkosh delegations were Bangladesh and Italy. UW Oshkosh also represented Botswana, Kuwait and Madagascar at the competition.

Kenneth J. Grieb, Coordinator of International Studies and faculty adviser to the Model United Nations Organization, noted that “Once again UW Oshkosh students demonstrated the ability to accurately represent nations from all major regions of the world, receiving awards representing nations with vastly differing needs and priorities.”

Delegates were judged on their knowledge of the issues, the accuracy of their representation of their nation’s foreign policy, their diplomatic and negotiating skills enabling them to build consensus support, and writing and speaking skills.

The UW Oshkosh students receiving Outstanding Delegate in Committee Awards included:

  • Chase W. Mitchell, Oshkosh, representing Bangladesh in the legal Committee, who was the only delegate in that committee to receive an Outstanding Delegate Award;
  • Allison J. Mahnke, Sun Prarie, representing Bangladesh in the Disarmament Committee;
  • Zachary D. Stuebs, Campbellsport, representing Italy in the Economic and Finance Committee;
  • Caitlin M. Hopper, Waukesha, representing Bangladesh in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee;
  • Christopher D. Stockus, West Salem, representing Bangladesh in the Economic and Finance Committee;
  • Kyle O. Callen, Waukesha, representing Panama in the Economic and Finance Committee;
  • Valerie A.M. Hagen, Black Wolf, representing Italy in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee;
  • Jordalyn B. Simpson, Poynette, representing Italy in the Economic and Social Council.
  • Brandon G. Holmes, Milwaukee, representing Botswana in the Disarmament Committee; and
  • Sarah K. Rowley, Port Washington, representing Panama in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee.

 

Students receiving Honorable Mentions in their committees included:

  • Alicia J. Speitz, Oshkosh, representing Botswana in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee;
  • Mindy B. Medrow, Oshkosh, representing Italy in the Legal Committee;
  • Lindsey M. Tyson, Oshkosh, representing Panama in the Legal Committee; and
  • Andrew Pflanzer, Oconomowoc, representing Bangladesh in the Economic and Social Council;
  • Daniel Dennis, Middleton, representing Madagascar in the Legal Committee
  • Nicholas Charles, Hancock, representing Portugal in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee.

 

Delegates’ Choice Awards, granted by vote of the participating student delegates, were won by Z. Stuebs, Mitchell, Hopper, Holmes, Simpson, and Morgan Barthen, Menomonie, representing Botswana in the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee.

The delegation of Bangladesh, which received an Outstanding Delegation Awards in both the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, and also swept awards by winning in each of the committees, consisted of: Mitchell, head delegate; Mahnke, Stockus, Hopper, and Pflanzer.

Students representing Italy, which also received Outstanding Delegation Awards in both the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, were: Z. Steubs, head delegate; Hagen, Medrow, Simpson, and Lindsey M. Newhauser, Lomira.

Students representing Panama, which received an Honorable Mention in the General Assembly, were: Nicole A. Lehto, West Bend, head delegate; Callen, Rowley, Tyson, and José de Jesus Martinez, Fond du Lac.

Students representing Botswana, were: Spietz, head delegate; Holmes, Barthen, and Jacob R. Stuebs, Campbellsport.

The delegation of Portugal, which received an Honorable Mention in the General Assembly consisted of: Kelsey L. Meske, Oshkosh, Head Delegate; Charles, Carrie C. Krenke, Fremont; and Austin Brace, Oshkosh.

Members of the delegation representing Kuwait were: Samantha M. Asselin, Sheboygan Falls, head delegate; Ibrahim T. Guede, Madison; Kevin A. Wernet, Jr., McFarland; and Andria N. Marsh, Neenah.

The delegation of Madagascar included: Dennis, head delegate; Karee J. Orrick, Sister Bay; Aracely Torres, Fond du Lac; and Rachael L. Stuebs, Campbellsport.
