Kevin Shumann, facilities designer-journey in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Planning and Construction department, has been named the recipient of the March STAR Award.

He was nominated by Kathy Lutzke, former academic department associate for Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Portions of Schumann’s nomination follow:

“I would like to recommend Kevin Shumann for a STAR Award.

“It has been a pleasure working with Kevin this past year both on plans for the Foreign Languages and Literatures future space in Clow Faculty, and most recently the quickly organized move to Dempsey. The recent move came two weeks earlier than anticipated and before the end of the semester. While this was less than ideal, it avoided two moves, and with Kevin’s expertise it was manageable. Under very stressful conditions, Kevin managed to keep us informed, on target, and relaxed. His attention to detail is amazing and he went above and beyond to make sure our department’s needs were satisfied. He even stopped back recently to see how everything is going and to ask if we have any needs.

“What is even more amazing is that our department was only one of many moves taking place within a short period of time and the moves continue to this day. Our new space is very different, from Radford with open areas where student seating is needed. We didn’t have the furniture, nor budget to purchase items. Kevin showed me several rooms in Dempsey that had furniture that was available for us to use, and thereby saving our department money and made a comfortable area for our students.

“Graebel Moving Company did the moves of both English and Foreign Language on Saturdays. Kevin said it was unnecessary for academic department associates or other staff to be there on the day of the move. He indicated that he would be there to handle any questions or problems that came up. I did stop by briefly and found Kevin unplugging and labeling two computers. They belonged to staff that weren’t under contract at the time and I had forgotten to go into their room and take care of their equipment.

“Without being asked he also created work orders to have our bulletin boards hung in our new area and take away surplus materials. He could have left that all for us to do, but with two weeks left in the semester, this helped it feel like our space and more accommodating to our students. The level of coordination for all of this is unbelievable and he manages it with professionalism and a smile.”
