Once again, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has earned high marks in the “Best for Vets: Colleges 2015” rankings, a “school-by-school assessment of veteran and military students’ success rates conducted by Gannett Government Media’s Military Times.”

On Nov. 10—the kickoff of Veterans Week at UW Oshkosh—Military Times announced that 140 colleges earned places in the Best for Vets rankings. UW Oshkosh has repeatedly earned spots in the top-50 for four-year colleges in the 5-year-old ratings and rankings of campuses’ support systems and success rates for military veterans. This year, UW Oshkosh landed in 41st place nationally among four-year institutions.

“UW Oshkosh has consistently supported veterans on campus through many departments, programs and policies,” said Shawn Monroe, UW Oshkosh Veterans Resource Coordinator. “We have a great team in the Veterans Resource Center, and a very supportive administration.”

“It’s always an honor to be recognized on a national level, and we will continue our commitment to serve the people who have served our country so honorably,” Monroe said.

Military Times describes “Best for Vets: Colleges 2015” as “an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an organization a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families… The detailed survey requires schools to meticulously document a tremendous array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to military and veteran students and to describe many aspects of veteran culture on a campus.”

“We factor in what is, to our knowledge, the most detailed school-by-school data on veteran students’ academic success anywhere, including graduation, retention, persistence and course completion rates,” said Amanda Miller, editor of Bets for Vets. “Two years ago, only 11 percent of the hundreds of schools surveyed could provide that level of detail. This year, that figure is up to 45 percent. By recognizing only the schools that do the most, we believe we’re helping to raise the bar in veteran student services.”

The UW Oshkosh Veterans Resource Center is “a comprehensive support office with a mission of providing essential benefit information and processing as well as campus and community resource coordination,” with a goal “to empower our veterans, service members and military dependents with the tools necessary for achieving their academic goals.”
