Graduates of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh are invited to give back to their alma mater by volunteering as University Studies Program (USP) alumni mentors for the spring 2015 semester, which begins Feb. 2.

An estimated 50 alumni are needed. The priority deadline to express your interest in becoming an alumni mentor is Nov. 17.

An Alumni Mentor Informational Session will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 12, in the Alumni Welcome and Conference Center, located on campus at the corner of Wisconsin Street and Pearl Avenue.

Students completing a community experience as part of their sophomore Quest III courses will be assigned a USP alumni mentor who will learn and serve side-by-side with them in the community. Many of the community experiences take place within 30 miles of the UWO campus.

UWO Alumni Board Vice President Scott Barr ’86, is an alumni mentor for the Essentials of Civic Engagement class, which involves serving with students at Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services in Oshkosh.

Barr has had the opportunity to work alongside the students for a day of service, take part in a “think tank” session to identify gaps in service for the population that Christine Ann serves and to advise students about their upcoming presentation about solutions to the service gap.

“It has been great fun so far working with the students and sharing what I’ve learned since leaving UW Oshkosh,” Barr said. “I’m looking forward to finishing out the semester and seeing how they do. I have already let the University Studies Program know that I’d love to volunteer again next semester.”

For more information, alumni can visit the USP website, attend the Nov. 12 informational session or contact Mike Lueder, the USP civic engagement coordinator, at luederm@uwosh.edu or (920) 424-4231.
