Michelle Munns, Veteran Certifying Official in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Veterans Resource Center, has been named the recipient of the November STAR Award.

Munns was nominated by Shawn Monroe, Veterans Resource Coordinator.

Portions of Munns’ nomination follow.

“As the Veteran Resource Coordinator for the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh I have the privilege of working with Michelle on a daily basis. While her positive attitude is infectious it’s her outstanding work ethic and creative problem solving abilities that makes UW Oshkosh a national leader in veteran services. I am proud to recommend Michelle for the Classified Staff Advisory Council’s STAR Award.

“Michelle assists approximately 700 student veterans and dependents a year certifying and tracking more than $700,000 in direct tuition payments to the university. Additionally, she manages more than $2 million in veteran tuition remissions through the WI GI Bill.

“Michelle is one of the first people on a campus a veteran meets. Her professional and caring personality opens the door to successful reintegration and education for our student veterans. She also works extremely hard to cultivate relationships not just across the campus, but with many local, state, federal and nonprofit agencies.

“Processing the ever changing veteran benefits through several state and federal agencies is quite complex. Quite often times contact information given by one department for another department within the same agency leads back, through a confusing and often frustrating chain of events, to the original contact. Michelle meets these challenges with a sense of humor and a drive to find solution.

“Michelle, on a daily basis, goes above and beyond her standard duties. When the Registrar’s office faced an extended absence, Michelle jumped in to assist in processing graduation applications. Additionally, she often assists other teams in the Registrar’s office during peak times such as diploma printing.

“Michelle meets every new student, prospective student and parent or spouse with enthusiasm and treats each case with genuine empathy and an unmatched attention to detail. While I’m sure there are many deserving STAR Award candidates, I cannot be more proud of Michelle’s contribution to our campus and community. She truly demonstrates a deep commitment to the University’s mission, the campus community and our student veterans.”
