University of Wisconsin Oshkosh sophomore Ciara Van Gheem was announced the winner of the 15th annual Student Playwriting Contest for her play Acceptance, which will be read publicly May 1 at 8 p.m. in the Experimental Theatre of the Fredric March Theatre building.

Gheem, from Appleton, had her play selected from a collection of 15 student-written plays to take the top spot in the contest.

A radio-TV-film major with minors in music and theater, Gheem has written numerous television scripts in the past but her contest entry was her first written stage play. She has, however, performed on stage in last semester’s production of The Christmas Schooner.

Gheem said she enjoys many forms of writing and looks to one day become a published author. When not writing or acting, she enjoys singing as a soprano in the Chamber Choir on campus.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to contribute calendar items, campus announcements and other good news to UW Oshkosh Today.
