Erik May, an IS technology services senior for Information Technology, has been named the recipient of the STAR Award for February 2010. He has served the University since 1997. Brenda Garza, a business specialist in the College of Nursing, nominated him. The nomination letter follows:

“Erik consistently goes above and beyond to try to help out when there is a technology problem that he works with. He does it with such professionalism and dedication that it makes you feel comfortable that he will do everything in his power to make things right.

“The College of Nursing was doing several upgrades to some of the workstations. While doing a purchase for monitors, we realized that the ones we had been purchasing were now twice as expensive, and there were very few anywhere.  We contacted Erik because we had a very fast deadline coming and were not sure what to do. Erik found out that the model we wanted was no longer available. He asked us for the specifications that we were looking for in a monitor and then quickly and completely researched which model was available that fit our needs and what vendor had them for the best price.

“During this entire process, Erik contacted us one-to-two times daily and kept us informed of his progress and any results. Within several days Erik gave us all the information that we needed to order the necessary monitors and had paved the way with vendor. The vendor was expecting the order and we received them in plenty of time.

“Above is just one example of many that Erik has done over and above what is required of him. His friendly nature and ability to speak in user-friendly language makes him a gem among computer end users. Erik’s willingness to answer a question over and over without getting upset and to interpret technology speak to make it easier to understand and his customer service skills of quick message response and constant progress reports make him a STAR to campus consumers. Erik May deserves the STAR award, and it is long overdue.”

Winners of the STAR Award receive a framed certificate, a reserved parking space for one month and a gift from University Books & More. The award for exceptional performance is presented each month to a member of the classified staff who has worked at least six months at UW Oshkosh.
