More than 150 graduate students will become University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumni at the Dec. 15 Midyear Commencement Ceremony.

While the students who will graduate with master’s degrees embrace the milestone moment, Graduate Studies at UW Oshkosh is embracing a milestone of its own: 50 years of graduates. The first master’s degrees came out of the then-Wisconsin State College in 1962. Counseling graduate-level education was among the first areas for focus for the University. Now, there are more than 13,000 graduate alumni and more than 30 graduate degree programs and certificates offered at the UW System’s third-largest institution.

Throughout the years, many things have changed in graduate-level education programming, as stated by the first chair of the Professional Counseling department in a recent interview that brought him back to UW Oshkosh.

UW Oshkosh has adapted and grown its programs during the last 50 years to meet the changing needs of the community and its students, including the recent addition of the first doctoral degree – Doctor of Nursing Practice.
