Community service tops University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumna Jessica King’s to-do list.

The Oshkosh lawyer and 1998 graduate, with majors in international studies, history and political science, will receive the UW Oshkosh Outstanding Young Alumni Award during Homecoming activities in October.

During her years as a UW Oshkosh student, King earned distinction as a member of the Model United Nations team and served a term as president of the Oshkosh Student Association.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree from UW Oshkosh, King earned a law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, Calif. She then worked as a staff attorney in Washington, D.C., resolving disputes between healthcare providers and various insurance companies.

In 2004, she joined the Oshkosh law firm of Steinhilber, Swanson, Mares, Marone & McDermott as an associate attorney. She also has served as an adjunct UW Oshkosh faculty member, teaching community power systems and introduction to international politics.

“Jessica King has established a distinguished career in both the legal profession and in public service and elected office, and her accomplishments have been recognized widely in both the legal and public service sectors,” said UWO International Studies coordinator Kenneth Grieb, in nominating King for the honor.

In spring 2007, King was elected to the Oshkosh Common Council. She also serves on the Grand Opera House Foundation Board, the Transit Advisory Board, Legal Action Wisconsin Board of Directors and the Board of Governors for the State Bar of Wisconsin.

“UWO and the city of Oshkosh offered me numerous opportunities as a young adult,” King said. “Serving the public gives me a chance to support a community that supported me.”

In March 2009, King was one of eight from across the country selected by the American Council for Young Political Leaders to participate in a bipartisan exchange delegation to the Philippines.

“Once again, Jess is involved in seeking ways to bring about change for the common good but on a much larger stage,” said Elliot Garb, emeritus UWO vice chancellor for student affairs. “

King is proud of the opportunities that UW Oshkosh creates as a public institution. “Compared with costly rivals, the value of UWO’s affordable higher education is priceless. I hope that UWO remains accessible to future generations,” she said.
