This summer, young women interested in a career in firefighting have the opportunity to explore the profession through a unique, girls-only fire science exploration camp.

The GO! (Gals Only!) Fire Science Camp is designed for young women ages 15-20  and provides opportunities to explore careers in fire and emergency response services.

The camps, which take place Aug. 2-4, are taught through a combination of instruction, hands-on application and activities that present a realistic view of fire and emergency service careers. Participants will be challenged with problem-solving, team building and leadership development activities and get career and résumé planning assistance.

All activities are taught by firefighters and EMS professionals on the UW Oshkosh campus with off-campus field experiences at the Appleton Fire Department, Fox Valley Technical College Regional Fire Training Center, Neenah/Menasha Fire Department and the Oshkosh Fire Department.

The fee is $75, and scholarships of $50 are available for the first 25 applicants.

Scholarship applications are due June 30. The registration deadline is July 10, 2009. After this date, call the Office of Continuing Education and Extension at (920) 424-1129 or toll-free at (800) 633-1442 to determine program availability.

The scholarship application form and camp registration information can be found on the Continuing Education and Extension Web site at www.uwosh.edu/llce/conted/youth/fire-science-camps or by calling (920) 424-1129 or toll-free (800) 633-1442.

The camps are made possible through donations from Pierce Manufacturing, the Candice Tylke Estate and the American Association of University Women.
