During his State of the State address yesterday, Gov. Jim Doyle spoke at length about the projected $5.4-billion state budget deficit for the 2009-2011 biennium. As you may recall, UW Oshkosh has already taken preparatory budgetary action, as outlined in my campus-wide memos of 10/17/08 and 10/30/08.

While we know we will have to help close the budget deficit as well as play a leadership role in Wisconsin’s economic recovery, we are very pleased that the Governor continues to express the need to make education, including public higher education, the state’s top priority.

As more details become clear, I will provide you with updates regarding how the deficit may impact this University. Plans are underway to schedule another campuswide budget forum; and we will work closely with University governance groups to develop the 2009-2011 budget plans.

The University and the UW System will continue to work closely with the Governor and Legislature during these difficult financial times. The complete transcript of the State of the State address can be viewed here.
