Author P.M. Forni, Ph.D., kicked off a two-day ‘Civility in Everyday Life’ workshop at UW Oshkosh with a Feb. 23 presentation to students, faculty and staff at Halsey Science Center on why civility matters.

MARCH

Nearly 100 University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students ran “Nearly Naked” Thursday, March 3 for a charity event sponsored by the Student Alumni Ambassadors in partnership with Circle K International. Students arrived at the starting line in front of Pollock Alumni House, dressed in layers. With the support and encouragement of Clash the Titan, the students stripped their clothes off and ran “Nearly Naked” for a mile around campus. All the clothes and proceeds from the event were donated to Easter Seals Wisconsin in support of Camp Wawbeck in Wisconsin Dells.

APRIL

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students and volunteers took to city of Oshkosh neighborhoods starting on April 19 to install rain barrels for homeowners hoping to retain and recycle a little extra rain water this spring. No one expected a snowstorm during the Earth Week project.

A pair of peregrine falcon chicks that hatched from a nest atop the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Gruenhagen Conference Center a few weeks ago received their ID bands on June 16.

No institution in the state of Wisconsin has as many solar thermal panels as UW Oshkosh. With summer officially underway in late June, Director of Facilities Management Steve Arndt talks about the varied solar systems the university uses to heat and power campus.

JULY

In July, students in the ESTEEM (Exploring Science, Technology and Engineering Education Majors) PreCollege summer program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh analyzed quail embryos as they learned about the early stages of development. Students carefully removed the embryos from the shell, analyzed them under a microscope and recorded what they saw. It was one more hands-on learning opportunity for participants in the ESTEEM camp, a two-week program at UW Oshkosh offering a variety of classes geared toward helping students prepare for college.

AUGUST

In August, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumna Stacey Cluppert ’10, of Markesan, was beginning the process of transforming the UW Oshkosh alumni-sponsored nutcracker, as part of Oshkosh’s Nutcrackers on the Town community art project, when we caught up with her for this interview. The design for the “Titan Tools” nutcracker will focus on the basics of education, depicted in the colors of Titan pride … yellow and black.

SEPTEMBER

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh recognized Opening Day 2011 on Sept. 6, 2011 with opening ceremonies, recognitition of faculty and staff awards, service and excellence and a slew of student activities on campus.

Students, some of whom were only in third grade at the time of the events that day, reflected on memories of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 as the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America that day neared.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s American Democracy Project hosted Constitution Day on Sept. 16, 2011. Supporters handed out free copies of the U.S. Constitution to students, offered patriotic cupcakes and featured a Constitution trivia dunk tank. … Nothing says democracy like a dunk tank.

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Chancellor Richard H. Wells, local and state officials and faculty, staff and students cut the ribbon on Sage Hall, the institution’s first new academic building in 40 years on Sept. 23. The building, greenest of its kind in Wisconsin, was dedicated earlier in the morning.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Counseling Services and the Department of Residence Life teamed up to bring a number of dogs to campus residence halls on Sept. 26. The Pet Perk Me Up program is designed to give students a chance to connect and strenghen community through pets.

OCTOBER

A few dozen former students, teachers and UW Oshkosh educational leaders gathered Oct. 22 for the Swart Hall historical marker dedication. The marker recognizes the long-lasting “laboratory school,” the first ever in the United States to embed a working Kindergarten inside a public university’s teacher preparation program.

DECEMBER

Graduates and their families share some reflections and plans in this video profile of another Midyear Commencement ceremony at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Approximately 1,000 students earned degrees on Dec. 17, 2011, bringing the annual total for the state’s third-largest university to 2,400.
