This past September, the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) chapter at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh set a record when it earned its 24th Gold Award, more awards than any other chapter.
APICS is an international organization with chapters across the globe. There are several criteria the chapter must excel in to earn these awards including: administration, education, programs, membership and public relations.
In order to achieve these awards, the UW Oshkosh student chapter partners with the local Fox Valley chapter to establish a board of directors, facilitate plant tours, bring in speakers and host presentations.
“It feels good to see students take up leadership responsibilities on the board of directors. Companies love to visit our school and present because they know that students who join APICS are serious about their career in supply chain management,” said Andrew Manikas, the faculty adviser of the organization for the past two years.
Each chapter is eligible to apply for a gold, silver, or bronze award each year and after achieving five Gold Awards in five consecutive years, the chapter receives the Platinum Award. The student organization also received its 20th consecutive Platinum Award this year.
“Through the many presentations we have had on campus by our guest speakers, we were able to get an insight of what is going on in the supply chain and operations management industry and what the current trends are. It is clearly beneficial to know what is going on in the industry when starting a new job, even as an intern before graduation,” said Marian Rothkegel, APICS chapter president
As a student, Rothkegel has had the opportunity to network on a national and international level. In addition to networking opportunities, student members of APICS have the opportunity to receive various certifications.
The UW Oshkosh APICS chapter has been on campus since the 1987 and was awarded their first gold medal in 1988. Currently, the chapter has about 60 members who come to meetings throughout the year to listen to speakers, network with members of the business community, participate in plant tours and assist with community service projects.
