An innovative new resource center designed to support military veterans entering or coming back to school at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will be dedicated Monday, Nov. 7 as kickoff to a week’s worth of events during UW Oshkosh Veterans Week 2011.

Chancellor Richard Wells and Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs John Scocos will help dedicate the new center in Dempsey Hall room 130 at 1 p.m. on Nov. 7.

The new veterans center has been developed and is billed as a “one-stop shop” for veterans, housing the Veterans Benefits Counselor and Veterans Resource Coordinator.

It further features:

  • A study lounge for veterans, with a computer lab and printer and a library of reading and support materials for veterans.
  • A location for external service providers such as the VA Hospital, counseling service and other veteran service organizations to hold hours on campus.
  • Suitable space for internal offices, such as advising, counseling, career services and other offices to also deliver service and feature regular service hours.
  • A peer mentoring program, which will be started this coming spring. It will include vets mentoring vets on how they succeeded and share educational and career-pursuit tips.
  • Space for Veteran’s Club meetings.
  • Home for a vets hotline, through which veterans can get answers to any and all questions they have. UW Oshkosh encourages them to access staff who can help them get the answers they seek.
