Funds raised from an upcoming all-around-campus golf outing will benefit the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Women’s Center.

The UW Oshkosh Women’s Center is encouraging fun by hosting the 2nd annual Urban Golf Fundraiser on Sept. 17, 2011.  The cost to register is $5 per student and $10 for the general public. Dollars raised will be used toward programming.

Urban golf is defined as, “An international game played most often in an urban setting on streets, sidewalks and even in businesses; where hazards aren’t sand traps but sewer drains and garbage cans.”

When the Women’s Center heard about the growing popularity of the game, they decided to give it a try.

“We were looking for new and exciting fundraising ideas,” Interim Director Jennifer Stelter said. “Something that could involve students, staff, faculty and the community and that would be fun for all ages.”

One of the greatest aspects of the game is that knowledge of golf is not necessary. Anyone can play.

“It’s more like grown-up mini golf, with real golf rules,” Stelter said. “Some of the holes from last year included the front steps of Kolf and the delivery ramp of the old River Commons building.”

Last year’s event raised $1,500 with the support and sponsorship of generous local businesses. The money raised from this event goes towards funding for Women’s Center programming, which could include purchasing rights to films or paying guest speakers. It also helps to provide the Women’s Center with equipment such as new projectors, digital cameras, magazine subscriptions and other materials for their lending library.

“Urban golf is a new concept in our area, and therefore we really need to figure out how to let folks know about it and how much fun it can be,” Stelter said. “We encourage fun. Prizes will be awarded for things such as best team name, best team costumes, worst score, best score, most balls lost and more.”
