For some students, it may have been the first opportunity ever to peer through high-powered microscopes and manipulate other laboratory equipment.

But for every student, it was the first time ever extracting an embryo from a delicate quail egg.

Students in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Exploring Science, Technology and Engineering Education Majors (ESTEEM) pre-college program got an opportunity in late July to use a campus lab to study quail embryos. The lab work gave the K-12 students in the two-week, summer program the chance to learn about the birds’ early stages of development.

The class was just one of the ESTEEM’s hands-on learning opportunities designed to fuel students’ interest in science, technology, math, pre-engineering, writing, computer programming and, ultimately, college.
