Seminal works are those works that stimulate the creation of yet more works. They are books, papers, speeches and more that strongly influence other people or other schools of thought and may be highly inspirational, unique, revolutionary, or show some kind of breakthrough in the subject matter. Seminal works often leave a lasting legacy and their content holds true for decades if not indefinitely.

The following references are a collection of seminal works in the field of sustainability and sustainable development. The list consists of readings that may help build a foundation for sustainability literacy and for understanding the history of the concept.
